Transparency closes it out: full panel, named sourcing, a founder who exists outside the marketing. Hidden information defaults to cut.

No. A small handful of the brands here send a referral fee through public programs they already run. The disclosure page names each one. The rest send nothing. Editor's Picks, anchor brands, and homepage callouts all get chosen on editorial merit. A brand that sends us nothing can outrank one that pays if its founder story is sharper.

What happens when a brand sells out?

The day we confirm a sale, the brand comes off P.L.S. and onto the public Sellout Ledger. No grace period, no wind-down. The Ledger already documents how this played out for Primal Kitchen (Kraft Heinz bought it for $200M in 2019), Simple Mills (Flowers Foods, $795M, February 2025), and Chomps (Stride Consumer Partners). It publishes who bought what for how much so readers can decide.

Founder LinkedIn, niche forums, regenerative-ag conferences, reader tips. That's the hunt, because these brands don't run ads and rarely keep a PR firm. Then we audit before we list. The brands with the best stories tend to have the worst marketing departments.

Why aren't there more brands per category?

Accepted Answer

Because most don't pass. The 3-Check Audit cuts more brands than it admits. Of the last batch of personal-care brands audited for shaving, four made it. They're on the shaving shelf. Three were cut for glycerin in the soap. The rest had VC funding, corporate parents, or "natural fragrance" hiding undisclosed compounds. A short list is the point.

Nothing gets recommended. Some categories have no product that clears the audit (infant formula is the standing example), and the honest answer is a guide that says so, with zero products attached. An empty shelf costs us a category. Recommending something that fails the checks would cost the whole site.
